The Covid Pandemic caused issue for so many people, especially for those who had to shield due to their susecepibility to life threatening illnesses. The team at Diamond Driveways decided they wanted to do something to help someone and so we created Diamond SOS. We wanted to provide a new driveway, for free, to a family that really could do with an improvement to their home, to make their lives a little easier.
Layla is a girl who suffers from FASD. FASD occurs when prenatal alcohol exposure affects the developing brain and body. FASD is a spectrum and each person with FASD is affected differently. While more than 400 conditions can co-occur, FASD is at its core a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition. However, all people with FASD have many strengths.
Layla also has cystic fibrosis – an inherited condition that causes sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive system. This causes lung infections and problems with digesting food. Symptoms usually start in early childhood and vary from child to child, but the condition gets slowly worse over time, with the lungs and digestive system becoming increasingly damaged.
Layla’s Mum, Shushma, has written a book, Layla’s Life, My Words on her “daughter’s ‘invisible disabilities’ to hopefully educate professionals who may not have heard yet of these diagnoses and a tool for parents whose children may have the same disabilities as my daughter, to know they are not alone.”
Throughout the Covid Pandemic Layla had to shield, due to her Cyctic Fibrosis, which meant she had to be home educated which threw up a whole host of new challenges for her family.
After hearing their story, the team decided that they really wanted to help Layla and her family. As Layla needs a wheelchair, having a smooth driveway is imperative to make getting in and out of the car as easily as possible.
So, thanks to the support of our friends, Brett Landscaping, who provided their block paving for free, we decided to create for Layla and her family, a driveway that will look good and make their lives just that little bit easier.
The final result not only looks good, but the driveway is now free of bumps and obstacles that get in the way of Layla’s wheelchair. Designed using Brett’s Omega Block Paving in charcoal, the finish also adds kerb appeal to the family’s home.
